More funding needed for ecrime unit

October 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

The Home Office has finally given its backing for a new central ecrime unit to fight cyber crime. Great news for long-suffering CSOs battling daily ecrime attacks but more work needed we think. The Home Office promises just £7m of funding to tackle an issue that the Home Office itself calls a ‘global menace’ - a figure we think is too small to tackle a very large problem.

We also await further information from the Government on whether the new proposals include the provision of a single line for the reporting of high-tech crime - at the moment this is unclear.

There is still no central place where large companies can report ecrime - our members believe this is an urgent issue the Home Office must address.

The Police Central ecrime Unit seems good start but, it must be the beginning of something much bigger and better.
